Design, Make & Fit: Coast Creative

This ground-up internal renovation of this five-story Victorian townhouse in West London saw us working with past clients in their new home to conceive, construct and fit interior joinery throughout the property.

Design Director Luke worked closely with the owners to realise their ideas and dreams within the bounds of a renovation that needed to be sympathetic to the fabric and architecture of the existing building, delivering our signature clean and contemporary aesthetic that they came to us for.

“The clients were really keen to have a clean and understated modern aesthetic throughout the interior of their new home. The property is a listed building with lots of period features and many of the idiosyncrasies that one has to expect from a property of this age, however. Almost every element of this project is built in, I wanted to use the framing of the work to act as the transition between old and new. To emphasise this we grain pulled the frames – allowing you to see the character of the timber through the finish – the internal doors and drawers are, in deliberate contrast, a flat finish..”

Luke White, Design Director

A room adjoining the master bedroom was converted into a dressing room, with built in wardrobes, bench seated dresser, and marble-topped vanity units in oak. The large oak central island unit features a marble top to match the existing fireplace surround and mantelpiece. Upholstered panels in grey wool surround the large dressing mirror, with rebated LED lighting, and surround the entrance to the room from the master bedroom, and the bench seat unit has a cushion and full-height back panel upholstered in the same fabric to soften the room.

Storage is everything in this room, with discrete lighting built into the wardrobes. The oak drawers featured “push to open” mechanisms to create totally flush fronts throughout. Burnished brass handles were selected for the wardrobe doors, and all of the hanging rails were custom fabricated in-house.

In the master bedroom we created “His & Hers” built-in wardrobes either side of the fireplace and chimneybreast. These had a white-painted finish with oak bar handles, and oak interiors that were lit with integrated LED strips.

The living room features an oak media unit that abuts the fireplace chimneybreast with a curved outside edge, and “disappearing” tambour sliding doors that slide around the curves and into the unit itself. The oak panels that front the unit were cut down into thin slices and reassembled for the tambour doors, so that when closed the appearance is of sawn oak with beautiful grain patterning but then as the doors are slid open the thin sections reveal themselves as they travel around the curve and disappear into the back of the unit.

On the other side of the chimney breast in the lounge we created a home bar in an inbuilt white unit. This featured bespoke hanging racks for glassware, servo-driven self-opening doors, and integrated LED lighting.

“The Snug” was a secondary reception room, also with a central fireplace. In here we again designed units to sit in the alcove on either side of the central chimney breast; on the left side, a built-in cupboard in white with oak handles and interior, and integrated lighting; on the right side, an identical unit with the top doors opening to reveal a large oak panel with a recessed and back-lit television, allowing the TV to be hidden when not in use.

We created a bench seat shoe storage unit for the ground floor entrance hall and stairwell in oak, with a marble seat top and grey wool upholstered back cushion, referencing the primary material and colour palette that runs throughout the property.
